Verification of Competency (VoC)

What is a VoC

A VoC is defined as ‘a method of documented evaluation of the skill level of a person against defined competency standards in order to evaluate the person's ability to carry out the relevant activity or works.’

Where are they used?

VoC’s are widely used around the world including in countries that New Zealand looks towards as ways of further improving our own systems, these countries include Australia, Canada and the United Kingdom.

What industries use VoC?

Several industries currently use VoC’s for high-risk roles, mobile plant operators, crane operators and vehicle drivers, however every industry can use them but maybe do not realise this yet, this is where we would like to help.

Why a VoC?

New workers may have minimal or no experience of the employers (PCBU’s) work, or its practices and procedures, it can be used as a tool verify pre-employment skills and knowledge.

However, even experienced workers' competency may decrease over time. When assessing competency, employers (PCBU’s) should consider:

  • Workers performing tasks that are undertaken infrequently
  • Workers returning from secondments to other roles within the business or from extended periods of leave

Employers (PCBU’s) also need to consider competency where:

  • New technology or equipment is introduced that may require additional training
  • New work practices or procedures are introduced
  • New legislative or standards requirements are introduced

If factors such as these are identified, employers (PCBU’s) need to assess the competency of workers to ensure they continue to have the knowledge and skills required to work safely.

A VoC is a very good way of doing this and we can help with both internal and external options.

The Digital Way of Thinking

Employers (PCBU’s) are required to ensure all their training and competency needs are met and we understand this can be costly due to sending staff off site for training or assessment courses.

We also know that some workers do not respond well to off-site classroom-based training or assessments and will be far more relaxed and at ease in their normal working environment.

Following the rest of the Major Oak Safety’s methodology that there is no substitute for being trained or assessed in your own workplace on your own equipment doing your actual job, this means that our digital VoC process enhances the current services offered by the following ways;

  • An instant on-site digital report
  • This can be emailed to both the worker and the employer on the day
  • Verifies both practical and theory skills
  • Incorporates photo evidence
  • Is machine/task specific
  • Provides a gap analysis of current skills or complacency
  • Can be used to form a training plan for each individual
  • Easily stored in training and worker files either electronic file or hard copy
  • Saves time and money by being carried out during in Real time, real workplace, task/machine specific activities
  • All VoC’s are conducted by fully trained and competent industry assessors.
  • All VoC’s can be conducted as either a standalone process or alongside formal assessments.
  • As no process or workplace is the same VoC’s can be custom designed to run in line with your own operating procedures, policies, tasks and site requirements.
