Chainsaw Safety and Operation Unit Standards 6916 & 6917

Course Aim
The chainsaw is an essential piece of machinery for so many businesses and operating it safely and efficiently is vital.

On completion of this course the trainee chainsaw operator will be able to safely demonstrate and apply the knowledge to inspect, operate and maintain a chainsaw to the correct safety standards for general application in and out of the workplace.

This is not an advanced course and does not cover tree felling or commercial fostery applications.

Chainsaw users within a commercial forestry operation should consider Unit 23411, Operate a chainsaw and carry out basic chainsaw maintenance in a commercial forestry situation.

 

Course Overview
Theory assessments covering the following: 

  • Demonstrate knowledge of the rules for chainsaw use;
  • Describe rules relating to the transport and use of chainsaw fuel;
  • Describe PPE and first aid requirements for chainsaw operators.
  • Disassemble and reassemble a chainsaw,
  • Identify its components and explain their functions;
  • Demonstrate knowledge of factors that influence the operation of a chainsaw;
  • Prepare to operate a chainsaw;
  • Start and test a chainsaw;
  • Use a chainsaw to make cuts.

 

 Prerequisites

  • Whilst there are no unit standard prerequisites the candidate should be familiar with work place polices and procedures for chainsaw use.
  • You can use your chainsaw or our chainsaw (you will need the manual, please send ahead of time or at least the make and model you own and will use for the course)
  • You can supply the product to cut or we can (Square / Rectangle and Round wood)
  • Min PPE Safety helmet, Face Guard, Ear protection, Hand protection, Leg protection, Foot protection

 

NZQA Unit Standard                   

          6916:          Demonstrate knowledge of the rules relating to chainsaw use - level 2, credits 5 

 

          6917:          Demonstrate basic chainsaw operation in a non-forestry production environment -

                              level 2, credits 10                                                                                                                   

Attendance Numbers               Minimum of 4, maximum of 8 per session

Course Costs                           $650+gst per person new, $330+gst Refresher

        Mileage: $120.00+gst per day to Auckland, Hamilton & Tauranga and $1+gst per km everywhere else
